Care Giving
Johnson & Johnson plays the role of a caregiver – with a different twist
By Joyce M. Briones

We know Johnson & Johnson for its consumer products and heartwarming commercials. But the tag line “A Company that Cares” evokes a deeper meaning that goes beyond establishing a trademark. With a comprehensive health program, Johnson & Johnson Philippines brings the concept of care giving to a different level.

The Johnson & Johnson Philippine Contributions Program was founded in 1992, when the management formed a contributions committee, appointed a director, and pooled seed money to finance the program. After taking part in several projects, the committee decided to prioritize health care and the education of children.

Through its health care program, Johnson & Johnson Philippines strives to improve the health conditions of the underprivileged and underserved children and their parents. The program secures funding from Johnson & Johnson Philippines, Inc., Johnson & Johnson Medical Philippines and Janssen-Cilag Philippines with support from Johnson & Johnson, the worldwide corporation. Depending on the project, the company works hand-in-hand with different partners such as UNICEF, UP College of Public Health, Department of Education and the Philippine Pediatric Society.
Some of Johnson & Johnson Philippines’ projects for health are the UNICEF-Johnson & Johnson NGO Capability Building Program, Usapang Mommy at Baby, Johnson and Johnson Outstanding Midwives Awards, Operation Smile and Deworming Program.

UNICEF-Johnson & Johnson NGO Capability Building Program
In 2002, Johnson & Johnson, with UNICEF, organized a series of management training programs for 60 participants representing 47 non-government organizations involved in the development and welfare of poor children. The Institute of Development Management and Governance of the UP Los Baños College of Public Affairs conducted one-week seminars on areas such as project planning and implementation, financial management and human resources development in Laguna, Cebu, and Davao City.

Usapang Mommy at Baby
Usapang Mommy at Baby is a public service television program where members of the Philippine Pediatric Society and Philippine Pediatric Dental Society share knowledge on effective child care with viewing mothers. The project started in 1994, when the Philippine Pediatric Society sought the funding from Johnson & Johnson Philippines to finance the program. In 1999, a new version was aired as a weekly segment in a popular TV program in Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, and Bacolod.

Johnson & Johnson Outstanding Midwives Awards
Johnson & Johnson Philippines, in cooperation with the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines, Inc. and the Department of Health, recognizes the efforts of exemplary midwives through the annual Johnson & Johnson Outstanding Midwives Awards. The awards are given to midwives who are dedicated health advocates, results-oriented, leaders in community health and manifest selfless devotion to duty. Since 1994, there have been 90 awardees from different provinces of the country.

Operation Smile
As the name suggests, Operation Smile aims to put smiles on the faces of children with cleft lip and cleft palate deformities. Every year since 1982, foreign and local doctors join medical missions to perform free operations on children in chosen sites such as Bacolod City, Cavite and Lucena. Johnson & Johnson has been consistently supporting the project through contributions of Ethicon sutures and other hospital supplies. To date, a total of 11,260 patients have been treated under this project.

Deworming Program
The Deworming Program was initially conducted among pre-elementary and Grade 1 students in selected public schools all over the country. Since then, almost 15,000 students have been dewormed. To support the deworming program is an educational campaign conducted with the Departments of Education and Health and UNICEF Philippines.

A Company that Cares
For Johnson & Johnson, taking care of the community is a responsibility inscribed in its mission. After ten years of giving, Johnson & Johnson has educated mothers, rewarded midwives, and made children smile, among others. Through the diverse programs it has created through the years, Johnson & Johnson has not only shown its concern for destitute patients, but for medical practitioners as well who take pride in providing free services to those in need. With these results, Johnson & Johnson Philippines has indeed proven to be a company that truly cares.
